"the home of golf"

Scotland is known as "the home of golf" as it is the first country where records show that golf was played.

As far back as 1457, King James II declared that it be banned lest men be tempted not to practise their archery, which was more useful in the defence of the kingdom against the English; and in 1491 James IV’s parliament ordered: ‘In na place of the Realme there be used Fute-ball, Golfe, or uther sik unproffitable sportis.’

However, golfers are a hardy breed ! and the sport survived and developed over the centures. Scotland is now home to some of the Best Golf Courses in the World and in particular you will find some stunning examples of Links Golf Courses, carved out of the wild coastlines - and providing some of the greatest challenges to golfers in the world today !

scotland - top for scenery !

Scotland is famous for its scenery - whether it's the mountains of the Highlands, scenic islands and coves of the Western Isles or beautiful countryside and villages, there is a lot to see. So even non golfers should find something to do. In fact we have highlighted a non golfing outing or option near most of the courses we have reviewed.

Competitive Golf

Scotland has some classic Championship Golf Courses. It hosts major events such as the British Open Champtionship (every two years), the Women's British Open, the Scottish Open (every year), the Alfred Dunhill Cup and in 2014 is hosting the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles.
