Prestwick Golf Club is just a half an hour's drive south west of Glasgow. Prestwick shares its boundaries with the Open Championship venue Royal Troon and is just 40 minutes from Turnberry, with Open final qualifying courses such as Kilmarnock Barassie, Glasgow Gailes, Western Gailes and Irvine Bogside all within a 20 minute drive.

Prestwick is a traditional 18 hole links course. Championship Length :  6544 yards. Par 71 SSS: 73.

history of prestwick

Prestwick Golf Club was founded in 1851 and hosted the first Open Championship in 1860. The winner was Willie Park from Musselburgh with a score of 174 for 36 Holes, 2 shots clear of "Old" Tom Morris.

Prestwick hosted the first 11 Championships. The last Open Championship to be played there was in 1925 when Jim Barnes from USA won.


A stone cairn, which you will find to the west of the Clubhouse, marks the first tee of the original 12 hole course on which the first Open was played. If you are interested in Golf History, the Pro Shop at Prestwick sells some very interesting prints and photographs of the Original Open Course.

Right across the road from the Prestwick Golf Club you will find the North Beach Hotel, a very nice small hotel which will give you excellent views down the golf fairway ! There are numerous hotels on the Ayrshire Course, in Troon, Ayr and Girvan. The Marine Hotel at Troon is popular as is the prestigious Turnberry Hotel.

Apart from Golf ! Ayrshire has a lprestwickot to offer. There are a number of lovely beaches. You can also visit Culzean Castle and Burns Cottage, where the famous poet Robert Burns was born.
