The Royal Dornoch Golf Club is situated in Sutherland in the North of Scotland. It has a magnificent setting with panoramic views of the Dornoch Firth, the beaches and the Sutherland and Ross-shire hills.

The course is laid out on links land that rises up from the sea on two distinct levels. You will have to negotiate ridges, hillocks, dunes, bunkers and undulating fairways typical of a links course.

The first eight holes follow the ridge and the remaining ten holes are played in the opposite direction and most run alongside the sandy beaches of the Dornoch FIrth.

This Championship Course is highly regarded and is regarded as one of the top golf courses in Scotland. Players can wear smart casuals. Handicap Certificates are required for the Championship Course at a maximum of 24 for men and 39 for ladies. There is also a second course called the Struie Course.

This club is a five hour drive from Glasgow. Or you could travel to Inverness from London by Sleeper Train or fly in to Inverness Airport. There are a good number of excellent courses in the Inverness area if you wish to have a golfing holiday and base yourself in that area.

history of royal dornoch

The Royal Dornoch Golf Club is one of the original places where golf was played in Scotland. It is recorded as being played in 1616 on links on town land along the seashore. The Club was started in 1877 and the Championship Course was designed originally by the legendary Tom Morris with John Sutherland updating it more recently.

More than a hundred years ago in 1906, King Edward VII, on a visit to the Club, was impressed enough by the Dornoch Golf Club to award it the title ‘Royal’.
